What if your MLM Company Shuts down?
Do you know How to protect your Hard Earned income from such an eventuality? I am not one to use the word HARD with Work, yet in this case, I must say Most MLM Builders Work dang Hard!
We are talking about Network marketing. Affiliate and MLM type companies. Many times usually just before a fall or If they have been around for yonks and need fresh blood, they change the comp plan.
So much so it doesn’t feel the same and your income drops majorly, in some cases by more than 60%!
What would you do, what would happen to your life?
Well it happened to us circa 2014, 15 and 2017.
Some Law of Attraction generalists and even coaches may say you manifested that… Seriously how could you…
Because its believed, everything that happens is in your Mind…So Dr Who-esque tendencies here huh! Considering you wouldn’t be the only affected Rep!
Lets preface this episode shall we!
NOTE: Before we preface, understand that We are NO LONGER PROMOTING A Network Marketing MLM Company.
Now that we are clear…Here is the latest in the MLM industry woes.
Advocare shut down weekend of 18th May. In case you don’t know of Advocare, they’re a large health and wellness network marketing company with a huge customer and distributor base. Over 100,000 globally.
Technically, they didn’t shut down. Rather, they revised their business model so they’re no longer a network marketing company. And to a Rep or Distributor, this is the same as a Shut down!
Now, they claim to have gone retail sales and left a one tier affiliate model. What?
That means that people who have built large teams have lost a sizable income, many of over 6 figures a year…! 
My heart goes out to those reps in Advocare who spent years building a business over time. Similar thing happened to us. It breaks the heart!
But here’s the deal, it’s part of the game for the brains behind these companies… The MLM model is created to suit only 3%! Meaning the 97% Reps are simply keeping the top 3% in luxury….Hornet’s nest? Bring it on!
Please understand that many people do benefit from promoting MLM products and services. Just that the writing is on the wall; not “If but when” will it shut down. Sadly it happens all the time in network marketing.

Its always sad, heartbreaking and unfortunate for those building teams and losing income overnight. In essence, you’re just a sales rep for the company you’re partnered with.
So let’s say you work a job for a company and they go out of business, people lose jobs, same deal. You don’t own your “business” in network marketing or MLM. Just like you don’t own your job.

I don’t know the exact reason why Advocare did what they did other than what the CEO said on Business For Home. But it’s business as usual and damn scary for those whose income has disappeared overnight, right?
Well like I said, it’s just part of the game, unless you run your business or own your and create the products etc. this can happen at any time in Network marketing.
Heck, it’s happened to us before too, we’ve lost so money, savings we couldn’t afford to.
So how do you protect yourself from a company shutting down with your source of livelihood?
Brand You..thats what.

If your Network Marketing Company Shuts Down – Here’s What To Do
Absolutely, you want to brand yourself, and learn proper business skills.
It took us 4 shut downs and/or failed MLMs, with our income along with the trust of many incl. loved ones that the penny dropped.
That this business model, though great for some, is NOT for all. And it is also the hardest on your relationships as a person.
The lessons took us into Personal development and tens of thousands of $$ in investment. And I promise you it takes lots of lessons to Learn Practical No BS Business Skills.
We do Not just randomly message people. Rather, we teach our process, which is simple and Duplicatable in any business. You’ll Learn how to:
- Connect,
- Qualify,
- Determine Need,

Has Your MLM Company Closed Its Doors? – What to do!
Obviously like all losses, it is important that you take time out to debrief your mind. To grieve, to release most of that negative emotion, because you will have lots.
If you are sold on MLM, have the Skills and Mindset to rebuild, and your current MLM Company Shuts Down, you Can Get back up and win.
All you have to do is…
Set yourself a 90 Day challenge to research 5-8 other companies that fit your core values and needs. Try out their products as a customer and test their customer service. Study their comp plans, choose one. Connect with leaders in that company, get you a Sponsor and get back in the game. The sooner the better.
If you do it right, share your story and processes, people will resonate, people who are into BRAND YOU. They already want to buy the things you have to offer and/or looking to join a business.

I am with a MLM. I get customers by offering them a free travel site. I get paid when they book and save money. I’m glad to have read this article. And I will always be aware and keep my eyes open. I know mlm is working for some people. I am not one of them as I think but your post is very useful for anyone
I have loosely attempted a few MLM companies, but definitely, don’t have it what it takes to succeed. I have always found that it is so sales-y and you have to constantly pitch and almost pigeonhole potential customers into saying yes. It is how I got duped into signing up in the first place. But you are so right….if the companies go under, or they change their business model, all of those people will be stuck without the income that they became accustomed to.
It is tactics like those Ashley, that give MLM a bad rap.
The Sale-sy pushy, pigeonholing, hypey promises of fast cash and a lifestyle that pulls most people.
The reality is it takes guts, time, skills, focus, persistence and a strong stomach for long days with no income, to create a successful business.

It is so scary to even think about that! I had a friend who was working in one of the tech companies a few years ago. Her company got shut down and then she had to spent almost a year being jobless but now she is doing fine. Thanks for sharing your tips!

I thought MLMs are the modern pyramid schemes? I know so many people who were a part of one at some point but none of them were that successful with it, so I’ve always steered clear from them.

Not all MLMs are bad, its the People who turn them into Schemes that end up losing people money. the Hype, the lies, the promises of fast cash…Usually targeting vulnerable people. But with the right leadership, skills, time, ACTION more people would succeed in creating an income from MLM.

Thats the idea Fran. Yet Usually those that start in MLM are trying to diversify their income. Without knowing that the MLM model is not built to serve the masses. Only the Top Builders.
Yes. You have to be ready always if it fails. This just happened to me recently but I just have to accept it and find another way.

MLM is a personal choice, and anyone who joins one must be ready to run hard and fast.
I would legit be crashed after all the hours spent and then it all goes away. The thought of it makes me cringe.

Loosing your hard earned money because a company shut down, is something one should not wish for, but at the same time is good to learn the in and out of any business you’re in, to protect your self.

If one learns Marketing and Advertising, they can build any business in fact, they would have Multiple streams thus losing one stream may hurt but it wouldnt be the end of the world.
Losing your bread and butter because the company shuts it down is a scary thought. I have a friend who experienced something similar and he had a tough time recovering from the loss.
Its a real pity Czjai. The problem is with the company executives though. The MLM Model is not built to serve the masses, Its built exactly like a Traditional Business, without the advantage of a Monthly Pay check for all working the business.
It’s really important to know what’s happening in any business you’re in. You need to be able to protect your self from all sides.
