Pinterest Vs Facebook Success, Does it Matter and Aren’t They the same? 11 Reasons for Both!
Pinterest Vs Facebook, which one should you choose for business and Ad Spend?
In today’s episode, I am gonna break it down for you in very simple terms and help you make an informed choice! See, a friend came to me, and this is how some of our chat went down…
Okay Syl, you keep talking about this, yet why should I use Pinterest as opposed to Facebook? Johnny Asked…Thing is, why should you choose between the two?
In my opinion, you can definitely rock both platforms and Attract traffic, generate leads and even more sales…
With that said, what else did I say to Johnny? My Pinterest Vs Facebook expose!
You know these two platforms are like a choice between your local Asda and Costco, right?
One saves you a ton of time, yet drives a ton of results for your business, YOU DON’T want to leave! The other EXPECTS you to spend a ton of time on it. You literally need to spend lots of time over there, to get any kind of traction, as often as you can…! Can you guess which is which?
Well, don’t worry, that’s where I come in. To show you the differences between Pinterest and Facebook.
Here is Why Pinterest Vs Facebook
Way back in 2012 Neil Patel didn’t give Pinterest as much kudos in his review of Facebook Vs Twitter Vs Pinterest post. He has since changed his tune, And I for one am so glad he did in is latest post on pinterest traffic! You see its very important when Social Influencers and industry leaders do stand behind a resource. It means you and I can get on with leveraging it with even more confidence and spend some of our Ad dollar on there.
And without further ado, below are my 11 major and essential differences in your decision on Pinterest Vs Facebook for your business growth!
#1. What is What on Facebook Vs Pinterest
While Pinterest is a search engine, it was integrated into the Social Hall of fame. While Facebook is a full on social media platform. And…
After years of being a Fan and today a Pinterest expert, I can say with surety that you cannot use the same strategies on both Facebook and Pinterest. Predominantly because of their differing Social Character. There are lots of things that work on Pinterest that do not work on Facebook.
If I had only 15 minutes a day…I would spend them on focused action on Pinterest and get a ton of traffic. On the other hand that can only happen on Facebook if I wrote a piece with a heart wrenching or scandalous image attached and it went viral. Or maybe a social influencer recommended/shared it…One can dream hey!
I know where I would spend my 15 focused minutes, How about you?
[bctt tweet=”Pinterest is a search engine, that was integrated into the Social Hall of fame. #pinterest #whypinterest #socialmediatips” username=”Juleskalpauli”]
#2. Pinterest is a Place to Organize and Share
On Pinterest you can share images, videos and content that Inspires, Entertains or Educates you! On the other hand, Facebook is where you connect with “Friends & Family.” You share life, work, career, business updates and even snoop on others lol. You can do so with text, videos, audios or Images.
You CANNOT share text based updates on Pinterest unless you anchor them with an image called a Pin!
#3. Pinterest Vs Facebook: Link Sharing
Without spending a ton of time here, Pinterest allows, in fact It positively welcomes your links. Every Pin Image can and should have its own linked content and you can actually go and switch out a link for a new one. ONLY ON YOUR own pins! You can learn a whole lot more about affiliate links on Pinterest here!
#4. Pinterest Vs Facebook: To Follow or Not to Follow
This one is really interesting. Its where Pinterest Vs Facebook gets more similar. On Facebook, you can follow a person without being friends with them aka sending them a friend request…! In other words, you follow their public posts! In a similar way, on Pinterest, you can follow a board or a few of someone’s Boards without following them as a person.
#5. Curiosity Vs Desires
With Facebook, you get instant gratification. You get to immediately see what someone is up to via their news-feed. Instant Curiosity gratification! You see how it’s been received via the likes, shares and comments. You can also private message the person and know that they have seen it via Messenger.
On the other hand, Pinterest is about planning your future! It’s where you go to get inspiration for things you want to do, get, create aka tomorrow’s projects…Personally I’ve used Pinterest to get Birthday gift ideas for my daughter’s 18th. Vacation planning, yes please…! And I check it for training tips. I get entertained lots while doing all this! In other words, Pinterest feeds my desires!
Brings me…
#6. Back to ASDA Vs COSTCO…
What the heck have these got to do with Pinterest or Facebook?
Okay, I can tell you that I don’t go to my local Asda to wander around browsing. I go there for grocery shopping; bread, veg, fruit, get to the checkout, pay and get out of there fast.
On the other hand, I walk into Costco or Zara for a shopping experience. In fact, we go as a family to enjoy the afternoon or morning in Costco! We wander the aisles, browsing, we check out the gigantic TVs, we look at fabulous garden sheds, home décor etc. While the kids were smaller, we spent hours in the toy section and even considered buying a garden play house. You too would end up buying furniture you don’t need plus unplanned Alcoholic drinks…!
We are drawn to all the gorgeous stuff we want that’s displayed in a home like setting…we are visual beings!
So, you ask me Pinterest Vs Facebook, I say Costco vs Asda. Pinterest feeds your visual desires, it draws you in, grabs your attention and tempts you to buy stuff you want. Facebook is that place you don’t really want to spend hours, even though you just might, you find the stuff you need, it is your Asda!
#7. Pinterest Vs Facebook Ads – Spent a Penny yet?
Naaa, not the British kind of spending a penny! I mean Ads dollar!
The two platforms work totally different, therefore your long term results are also way different!
Here is why!
Because of the shelf life of your Pin (which I talk about in a rolly-mo) your promoted Pin will perform way better and last longer than a FaceBook post. Am talking way after you shut the Ad down and not paying the platform for advertising.
Here’s what I mean; Soon as your FB ad runs and is done, so does its organic reach! Very few Ads have a residual run on after they are closed. WHY?
Because Facebook Ads are usually not created On your News-feed or even Fan Page!
So, your FB Ad post is only available during its paid for period. That’s it.
The sweet deal about a promoted pin, once the Ad campaign is over, the pin continues to grow in popularity. It will get even more shares coz it stays at the top of the newsfeed longer as a “Popular pin”. The Ad campaign simply boosts the pin back to the top in Pinterest Search and in the smart feed.
This means; More traffic, leads and sales for you via the linked content! In other words, you keep getting residual results, long after the Ad campaign is done. Did I hear a great ROI? Yes please! ?

#8. Search Vs Social
Pinterest is where you get to search while feeding your eyes and discover new stuff in a funky way. Pinterest is a visual search engine, and if you are a content marketer, (yes, bloggers are content marketers) You can rank your content on other search engines faster via Pinterest!
Be honest, when was the last time you held a conversation via Pinterest? It just isn’t so cool. And who is already missing the Pinterest “Like/heart button”? I quite liked it though.
On the other hand, Facebook is a social platform. You are encouraged to socialize by engaging with another person’s content. So, you get to like, share, comment and even hold a private conversation with others every blessed day! It was designed for socializing, while Pinterest was designed for bookmarking and search! So the two platforms serve different purposes for your business/brand exposure and growth!
#9. Pinterest Vs Facebook: Content Shelf Life
This to me and any entrepreneur/content marketer should be the deal clincher!
The shelf life of a facebook update Vs that of a Pin!
I don’t know about you, but I would love it to last longer…Ooops getcha head out the gutter!
[bctt tweet=”I don’t know about you, but I would love it to last longer… #Pinteresttips #PinterestExpert ” username=”Juleskalpauli”]
Did you know that the shelf life of a Facebook status update is Max 24 hours? That’s on average way lower at 15-30 minutes?
On the other hand, a Pin can run for ages, as in years. Plus its long… lol!
We have a pin growing steadily in shares for the last 18 months. Although on average another Pinterest expert may say that the average shelf life of a pin is 90 days! I’ll take 18 months any day!
Unless it goes viral and is shared extensively, a Facebook post will not go far! Facebook Algorithm is set in such a way that even a Post owner may never see their post again unless its anchored by an Image!
Yet a pin can get to the Top of the smart-feed over and over the long-term lifespan and content exposure of pins is so much bigger and longer that a Facebook post!
Woot…drink that with your next Java. I love this platform!
#10. Quickie Vs Longie: Go Viral
By the way which do you prefer…?
Seriously, your content can go viral on either platform. Although that is more likely to be INSTANT via facebook. Yet that same “viral” post can die out pretty fast, even overnight. Yet, once a pin goes viral, there is no stopping it. It’s like a runaway train!
[bctt tweet=”Once a pin goes viral, there is no stopping it! #SocialMediaMarketing #PinterestforBusiness” username=”Juleskalpauli”]
So, while you may have a quickie instant gratification from Facebook page Ad, you gotta work it with Pinterest. It is Slow but steady. Pinterest needs and deserves your long term vision to get Longer Term residual results!
#11 Don’t Forget About The Price Tag
On Facebook I say Forget about the price tag in your posts. It is immediately considered salesy and hidden from your audience. On Pinterest, DO NOT Forget about the Price Tag on your Pin Image if you sell tangible products. Add a discreet price on your image and Pinterest will kindly add it on top of the Pin for your audience. People actually respect knowing exactly how much they would pay and quite often buy from a Pin inspired product! (See image on left)
Pinterest Vs Facebook: It’s a Wrap
So you want a quickie or you want it slow but sure? You want to whizz thru and grab what you can, or you want a long leisurely experience that lasts and lasts. You choose! ?
I highly recommend that instead of looking at it as Pinterest Vs Facebook posts, you create a strategy to succeed with both. You can do this by using a our proven blueprint so your journey is cut shorter.
Definitely, grab some instant results from Facebook (harder with their constant algorithm changes) and invest in long term residuals from Pinterest!
Remember both Facebook and Pinterest have different aims, audiences and offer different results!

I have always wondered which social media will give me the best traction. After reading you article it does help shed light to which social media that I should focus more on. Thank you
Hi Wynne,
Glad to having helped you get clarity, thanks for stopping by! 🙂
One thing that I can say about the FB ads is that, you could post the ad as a standard FB page on your page, and then boost that. That way, even after the run of the paid ad has finished, the post will still be there organically.
Hi Gareth,
We love FB ads for that and we found a real cool way to add the Ad created inside of the Ads manager to our page. That way we still get the credit of the ads reach and add organic reach too 🙂 yet with Pinterest your Pin will keep going even longer…Cool platforms!
Both platforms work well for me and I get steady traffic from both of them. My ad account with Facebook is much older and so that relationship has bore more fruit than most people experience. Pinterest has brought me rewards without ads but recently, I decided to increase my budget there too. Love ’em both! 🙂
Yayyy finally we meet a like minded entrepreneur. We find Facebook great for engagement and building the Know Like and Trust factor, while spending some ad money on there too! 🙂
Thanks for your insights Elizabeth! 🙂
Hi Julie,
I am spending less time promoting on Pinterest since I haven’t seen results from my promotion there. Thankfully, I seem to have found my audience at Facebook.
Janice
To each their own Janice. It means You are Focusing your love, gratitude and attention on Facebook, thus getting more from it. Soon you will have to spend some ad mullah though…FB is determined to get businesses paying to play, and frankly thats okay. After all we intend to make money from the audience they have amassed!
Good to see you here! 🙂
Julie Syl
This is awesome information for Pinterest vs Facebook. They are both great to get traffic to your site. Pinterest is more image oriented than Facebook in my opinion. Thanks for sharing the information.
Pinterest IS Visual, and Facebook is more about socializing and more lately ADVERTISING! Glad you got value Rebecca! 🙂
Right now Pinterest is where my traffic comes from, then Facebook and Organic. I have been learning a lot about both platforms. This morning I started to track my analytic on both. I will need to re-read this!
Glad you are talking time to track April. its essential to your blog growth! 🙂
They are definitely not the same – I like to use these networks for different things. Pinterest is very visual for me.
Exactly Krystal,
yet lots of network and internet marketers compare them in terms of HOW they use them, thus getting Zero results on Pinterest mostly!
I actually use both social media platforms. I like them both but I was intrigued that I immediately got a lot of followers using Pinterest. I still have to be savvy at this. Thanks for pointing out the pros/cons.
Glad you got some value and yes its essential to know what is what on each platform! 🙂
Thank you for always creating great content. I will save this for further reading
Hey Mardene, happy to serve 🙂 Good to see you here too!
These are great comparisons. I really like Pinterest to generate long-term traffic. Facebook is great for short-term exposure from what I have found.
Yes Clint, spot on on the two platforms! 🙂
Love your shopping comparisons for social media. I use Pinterest to plan my best life. It holds all of the things I’d hope for.
Exactly Heather, We do too 🙂
I love how you compared Facebook and Pinterest side by side when it comes to traffic generation, ads placement, etc. That was really helpful. It is a good thing I read this before I paid for a Facebook ad.
Glad you got value, thanks for your time as well 🙂
It can be so hard to know where to promote content. This is such a helpful breakdown. I like Pinterest a lot because of the longer shelf life, and it seems like an easier way to share content rather than trying to make a post attention grabbing as you have to on facebook. Thanks for the great tips.
Exactly Kait. Make your Image do the talking and use automation to get the attention you need on Pinterest 🙂 we love it!
I love the 15 focused minutes. These are great rules of thumb to keep in mind. Pinterest and Facebook have different audiences as well, something else to keep in mind.
Thank you Lisa,
we gotta get the message out there. too many people frustrated on other online platforms when they can attract their tribe via Pinterest!
This is really a great tips. To understand what is the difference between Facebook and Pinterest. Thank you for sharing your enlightened post.
Hi Victoria,
Its amazing how lots of people dont get it and treat the two platforms like they are the same!
Great comparison of both platforms. Thanks for sharing this.
A pleasure Adewale 🙂 Thanks for popping by!
I love both social media platforms, but I am more into Facebook.
We know Jelena, and You are good with Facebook 🙂
Thanks for letting the readers understand well the comparison between the two. Awesome! Thank you so much for these tips.
My pleasure Kelly, happy to serve 🙂
JulieSyl
Great post and super fun read. PInterest is one of my favorite platforms, I haven’t been using Facebook as much recently
Facebook gets more and more commercial with time…Its time people realised that and spread their net wider!
Our mission is to be there to help!
I’ve been hearing a lot about this lately and have been leaning toward Pinterest. After reading your article, I will continue to do so!
Glad to inspire Mary 🙂
Nice breakdown on how to utilize these two social media sites to my advantage, insightful.
Glad you got value Stephanie 🙂
I think both Pinterest and Facebook offer great tools for successful online businesses. I mostly use Pinterest and it’s been very helpful in my success.
Se find Pinterest awesome too Sarah. Tanks for your time! 🙂
These are gret points. I find that Pinterest is good for visual learners. I also get tons of traffice from Pinterest.
Precisely Betty,
we visual beings do get Pinterest Fast and get the fruits thereof 🙂
Thank you for linking up at The Blogger’s Pit Stop Link Party. I’m sharing your link on social media.
Carol (“Mimi”) from Home with Mimi
Hey Mimi,
We love the Pitstop and we thank you for stopping by and sharing too 🙂
Hope you had a great Birthday!
Jules
Thanks Julie & Paul for the informative comparison of Facebook and Pinterest. I have been pinning my blog posts for a long time, but not doing much else with it. Clearly I need to invest some time and energy in Pinterest. I don’t sell anything, but I would like to improve engagement with my blog and widen my audience. Thanks again for the useful information.
~Christie
Hi Christie,
Why exactly do you blog for? Is it a hobby. Because even a Hobby has a GOAL and that Goal is Your Uniquer Selling Point which You need to promote effectively on whichever platform you chose. when you are not clear on that, you don’t get desired results!
Pinterest has does so much for me but I certainly don’t overlook Facebook. Found you on Bolggers Pit Stop
Hey Candy,
We love the Pit Stop. Glad you find Pinterest as fun as we do 🙂
I promote on both platforms which definitely benefits me so much. But most of the time, I find that it’s easier for me to engage with people on facebook especially with my followers. Of course, pinterest is amazing too!
Thats exactly what we say AnnMarie,
Its best to Guide your leads from Pinterest for a more personal experience on Facebook 🙂
This is an awesome post on the differences between pinterest and facebook. These are awesome reasons for success on both pinterest and facebook which anyone wanting to build a business should indeed check out. Thanks for sharing the information.
Thank You Rebecca,
We sure hope to help more people use these Resources the right way for long term results 🙂
This is a great read. Now i know why many people use Pinterest and Facebook. Both are a great socia media.
Yes Chei you choose which one suits your brand best and get to work, promoting, marketing, advertising, engaging building that Trust! 🙂
This is such a great post! I have not been able to master Facebook but I have been getting 100’s of thousands of visitors through Pinterest. I seriously can not talk enough about how much I love using Pinterest for my business. Thanks so much for this amazing post. I am going to work on my Facebook pages. They need some work. haha!
Hi Claire,
Kapow…Boomski Yes. We love Pinterest success. I say focus on your Pinterest. Why change winning horse? 🙂 Keep rocking it out there! 🙂
Whoa, Thank you, Julie! This comparison between FB and Pinterest is fantastic. Now I understand why so many marketers are using Pinterest vs Facebook.
Hey Tara,
you are welcome hun. I hope you will focus some of your time and resources on Pinterest. Its amazing 🙂
This was such an interesting read with so many great tips. Both Pinterest and Facebook are platforms I’ve struggled to grow so haven’t really given much effort to. I clearly haven’t really been using either properly so I’ll work through your points here and hopefully that will change.
Hi Helen,
Whenever someone tells me they struggle on a platform I ask them 1 simple question: Do you believe in what you offer and Are You focused and consistent in your promoting it?
Usually the answer falls short. When you Give One platform your attention, learn how to use it, implement, rinse and repeat you will see results faster than you can say rumplestilskin 🙂
Jules
I have different strategies while using each one myself. I am different in the descriptions and tags depending on the channel I am using
Precisely my point Erinn,
Each one was created for different aims and results, thus my expose of Pinterest Vs Facebook for the business owner, entrepreneur, blogger and marketer! 🙂
I love Pinterest and use it for my blog all the time! I also have a facebook page for my blog, but I find Pinterest helps the most.
Cool beans Sarah,
Many Network marketing bloggers dont see the value of Pinterest for their blog and they struggle to rank for even one post! Keep rocking it! 🙂
What a great article. I like facebook than pinterest because It’s easy to connect with people and easy to tagged friends while Pinterest is something that you chase on your own.
What a great article. You are so smart and detailed. I like facebook more than pinterest because I like how it is far easier to connect to one another. While Pinterest is something that you chase on your own.
Hi Kelly,
I beg to differ on a more technical level. Pinterest doesn’t need you to chase anyone, They literally come over to your content because they like what they see and if yo serve them they will come back. No need to cajole, and hold long winded conversations. Similar to a Designer high street grocery store…I like that about it! 🙂
Really great post and tips!! I definitely find myself using Pinterest as more of a search engine at times. Still, I have yet to purchase Ads there – I will be rethinking that for sure!
Definitely Tiffany, rethink that strategy, And do check out our Promoted Pins Training right here so you can rock it on there as well! https://juleskalpauli.com/pinterest-ads-promoted-pins-strategy/ 🙂
Good comparison post, but I personally need both in my business!
Like I said Ashley, definitely you need both, Yet you have to decide where you spend More of your resources! Without carrying the donkey!
I feel like FB is much more social, while Pinterest is something that you peruse on your own. Then you end up sharing the pin on Facebook!
Interesting! I’ve never even thought about comparing the two. They’re both so different in my mind and I use them for completely different things. I’d def say I’m more of a Pinterest master than a FB one. I”m only okay at FB ads.
I like FB more because I like how it is far easier to interact with one another – with tagging and what not. On pinterest, sure you can leave comments, but I never know how to tag people so they can see the comment!
You cant GiGi and Pinterest is not for engaging. Its for Ranking Search, traffic and Sales all the Koolaid we like over here :p
They obviously have their own advantages and disadvantages, depending on what you’re promoting. But I think utilizing both for your business is a great idea! It’s definitely going to help you reach more people!
Absolutely Carol. And Like I said, If I only had 15 minutes a day, I know where I would leverage them 🙂
Great comparisons! It can be so hard to know what exactly will work with each social media channel, and they are so important to growing your brand. Thanks for the great info.
Glad you got some value Kait. You can focus on one to start with, until you are confident and get results! 🙂
Facebook posts live and die in such a short time, like you pointed out. We put so much effort into promoting our company on FB only to have to do it all over again the day after. Our Pinterest pins on the other hand tend to bring us steady traffic.. it’s far more evergreen. Because of that, we’ve started refocusing our efforts.
Ronnie,
You hit the nail on the head. Pinterest Vs Facebook Posts…I wold go for the former any day, if I had to choose. Thank God we dont have to! Yet!
Glad you are refocusing your efforts! 🙂
I love both social media sites, and the unique purposes that they serve for my blog. My renewed interest for Pinterest (oh, they rhyme!) is all thanks to your blog. 🙂
Now that is a powerful Testimony Czjai. Thank You and glad you are getting value! 🙂
I am coming back and reading more, I crave this knowledge lol I plan to stick with both, although I need way more information about both, definitely Pinterest. Thank-you for sharing an enlightening post.
Go for it Gladys, BUT get focused is all I can say and your results will be amazing! 🙂
Thank you for explaining the difference. I have been trying to learn everything about Pinterest lately because I want to help some blogger friend.
Hi Ruth,
Why isnt the blogger friend learning things for themselves? Or you are their VA?
Glad yo got some value and a resource to explain things more better! 🙂
Thanks for breaking down the comparison between the two. I’m more of a facebook gal but I’m going to dig more to Pinterest after this. I like the idea of following a specific board than the person.
Hey Sharon,
You are the exception! Are you getting great ORGANIC Leads and sales aka results with Facebook???
That would be amazing, We would love to hear your strategy for that!
You are so smart and detailed. I thought I knew a lot but I just got a few lessons in Pinterest, so thank you! I get a lot of my blog traffic from pinterest and rarely any from facebook. Maybe because I dont keep up with the frequent changes that facebook makes.
Thank You Jen,
Facebook is too busy changing things that WORK to get the dollar. They are focused on pleasing their share holders…BUT that is driving their target market away…The Young Generation X are off to Snapchat because their posts on facebook arent getting traction. These 15-20yr olds were on Facebook to SOCIALIZE…! They cant face being “Unpopular” which is what facebook makes one feel like, with your content not served to anyone! On Snapchat they dont feel unpopular on a daily basis and the content disappears so they can be crazy naughty!
I wish Facebook would stop being so greedy! Yet Block any other entrepreneur’s attempt to serve their hard earned audience unless you pay! And even that doesnt guarantee you will get your desired results either. Despite zoning in on your audience!
[ Smiles ] I would go with Pinterest any day.
Why?
Because, Facebook killed off their organic search feature.
Bloggers have to pay Facebook a sum of money in order to boost their posts.
Whereas, on Pinterest, a blogger has the potential of reaching a wider audience for free!
You got that spot on Renard 🙂
Facebook is Killing the golden goose slowly but surely…They are starting to do the same with the Live Video too!
So I am on a mission to open my people’s eyes ad minds to an easier alternative. 🙂
“If I had only 15 minutes…I would spend them on focused action on Pinterest and get a ton of traffic.” That is very powerful and it says a lot. Mind blown
Hey Kenny,
Thanks for the compliment!
I had to say the Fact right. 15 Mins on facebook unless spent creating a PAID Ad Campaign will not produce for you anything significant! Not that you will notice unless you watch your Insights like a hawk! And most marketers and bloggers juts dont! 🙂 So Yup.
These are some great tips. Pinterest is something that I have not mastered yet, business-wise. It looks easy but I need to do some researching on to effectively use it for business. I’m also going to read your post about affiliate links on Pinterest. Thanks!
Hey Brandi,
You can cut your journey shorter as an entrepreneur on Pinterest. I always count y time as the price Pay to master something. We can help you do that! 🙂
