Pinterest Tutorial – What are Pinterest Sections and How do you Use them for more Blog Traffic and Rank?
Ever considered using Pinterest to plan your birthday or wedding bash? Well enter Pinterest Sections…I know sounds far-fetched but bear with…And while you do go ahead and grab yourself a copy of The Art of Pinterest Profits from Amazon! I wrote it just for you!
Plus, do you know how to organize your pins into Pinterest board sections?
Well that’s more like it then, right?
I tell you what, we have been pinning away like heck and our VA gets to pin stuff on our boards and sometimes they end up on the wrong boards to be honest! As in Nada organisation…
So, I for one I am super excited about the Pinterest Sections feature!
You may be wondering, is Julie late to the party? Yet, if you are regular here…
You’ll know that I first test out a tool so I know just how to use it before I share. And the Pinterest sections are no different.
To be honest its better to wait out some of these things with Pinterest’s lightning speed changes and all that juice.
So, in today’s episode, I am dishing the goodies on what I believe you will find most useful and why you absolutely MUST Save your pin images in Specific Keyword rich Pinterest Sections!
[clickToTweet tweet=”You can Save your pin images in Specific Keyword rich Pinterest Sections! #Pinterestsections” quote=”You absolutely MUST Save your pin images in Specific Keyword rich Pinterest Sections”]
First of all, you need to understand that Pinterest assigns keywords to your pins! Yes, I know preposterous isn’t it? Deal with it already, after all you got me to show you how to take advantage of all this juice.
If you are applying Pinterest SEO, you may have named your pin image the relevant keyword.
Example: Your content and related pin is about “Amsterdam Cuisine” but if people are pinning it to random boards like ‘Giraffe baby shower’, (does this even exist?)
Then Pinterest is going to think it is about those random things!
In this instance, Pinterest may assume your pin is about giraffes, and they will probably keyword it “Giraffe baby”…Cute, but wont serve your brand, right?
And so, from that perspective, it’s absolutely essential that Pinning/Saving your pins in the first instance to relevant keyword named sections is hugely helpful in letting Pinterest know what your pins are about!
But hang on minute Julie Syl…
What is a Pinterest Section when Its at Home?
Well, on the back-end of 2017, Pinterest rolled out another new feature (they are good for this…new features I mean!)
Anyway, this new feature Pinterest added was to help you organise your Pins/Content inside of your boards! I call it adding “a Separator inside of your Virtual filing cabinet” or a Bookmark in a book. This is, ease of finding content, or maximizing Pinterest search…woot!
According to Pinterest CEO, the Pinterest Section feature was one of the top most requested things by pinners. Esp. those who are more organised and love to use it for what it was created for. I.e. organise your stuff, and show case your expertise, interests, skills or knowledge!
So….
How Does the Pinterest Search Benefit Online Marketers and eCommerce Stores?
**(If you are more a Visual person watch Video further down)
So, does a dog love meat lol.
a) Market research: For you the entrepreneur, this functionality is very useful as you start using it, you will start to notice where your potential customers and users go as they pin and save stuff.
Example: You have a Board named: “Summer Wear”, then add: children’s, women’s wear, men’s wear, summer shoes etc. as sections inside of that board! Below is how this blog Juleskalpauli Board Sections look like: With Sections on Social Media Marketing, Facebook Marketing, Pinterest expert Tips, Online Marketing, etc.
You will have your very own Shop Shelves, and you will notice which ones get the most footprints aka saves and clicks!
[clickToTweet tweet=”You will have your very own Shop Shelves. #PinterestSections” quote=”You will have your very own Shop Shelves. #pinterestsections”]
b) Better Customer Experience: You are now able to guide and show people exactly what they are looking for. Therefore, helping them save time by pointing them to where they can focus their search efforts.
By the way you can add sections to Group boards whether you created them or not. This makes it easier for you to Pin your content in an even more niched way in large collaborator Group boards, meaning? Your content gets found faster!
c) Increase Social Influence: Guess what, this function is making it so much easier to attract even more TARGETED Pinterest Followers…Did someone say more social influence…yep!
d) Organize and Clean up your Boards. WHY clean?
Well those pins you shared that have not picked up any love could be either deleted or saved in a Section and could take off! You can save content to a Secret Section and Use if for Scheduling to related public and group boards. I am reliably informed that BoardBooster allows for you to schedule via Sections, good for them! 🙂
e) Plan that event or party – yes, I told you didn’t I! ? Seriously if you are planning your next party or you are looking for a sexy recipe to prepare for dinner tonight look to Pinterest sections. Create that Secret Section, And Tag the event suspects aka participants or planners. Secret gifts can be given as well. Directly via a Pin and its all private!
See, you can create sections as you plan that event for: gifts, party décor, different countries cuisines and recipes. The possibilities are truly endless!
How to Add Sections:
The video below demonstrates all this, but very briefly:
Do remember to Download your Pinterest Domination Blueprint Here
Step 1. To use the feature, Login to Pinterest, open up a Board and then tap “Add Section” as shown below:
Step 2. Name your new sub-board or section.
Every time you save something to a board that has sections, a small arrow appears. Click on the arrow and select the section you wish to pin to! And that’s it.
To edit, rename or delete a section, (Maybe you made a Typo or you no longer promote that product). Simply click on the pencil just like on the board and do the needful!
Once you have created your “Pinterest Sections”, go ahead and…
Step 3. Organize your Pins
To do this, Use the “Organize” feature, simply click the Organize button above, select your pins, hit “Move” and it automatically moves them for you…Sweet!
And like boards, your section can be “Secret” or Public.
The Pinterest Sections You should have
As I always say, whatever your blog categories, so should your boards be named, and for sections, niche it down.
Think about it, from a search perspective, the more you use your relevant keywords in your pins and related sections, the quicker Pinterest knows what your content and pin is about and present you in the right search results…Which by the way, populate to other search engines!
For this reason alone, I highly recommend that you take the time to Set your Sections up today!
First go do some more Keyword research using the Google Keyword tool. Name your Sections the low hanging fruit Keywords.
Read our post on White hat SEO if you have no clue what I am talking about! And see your content rank higher in search engines like google!
You will also increase your follower base by more targeted people. Which in turn will increase your subscribers and buyers! Already!
So, now is your chance to use those long tailed key words to create sections inside of your boards.
Below are some ideas of what sections to add, to organise your boards better.
#1. Like I said, niche it down even more in your sections. Slice that loaf of bread now. I used the same niche keywords as we have on our website. Do the same for your blog, eComm or, Etsy, Shopify store etc.
This is literally making it super simple for your customers to find your services, offers or product no matter where they are.
#2. By Keywords – help tell your audience and pinners what your pins are about. Create multiple Keyword named sections for your content pins.
#3. Create Content Type Sections – Visuals, Inspirational, Videos, blog posts, etc.
#4. Different Social or Online Platform tips e.g. Marketing on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat etc.
#5. Age related – if your products are segmented into ages, do the same for your Boards Sections.
Sadly, Tailwind our pinterest scheduler of choice is not looking to integrate this functionality any time soon. According to the powers that be over there, they believe that Pinterest sections are not really for the marketer. Rather for the casual user. WHY…
Well in their view, re-modelling your pin boards is not the best use of your time…and I agree. That’s why I encourage you to outsource the task ala Tim Ferriss 4-Hour Week style! (By the way you should read that book!) #Justsaying
Anyhoo, for about $20 you can have all your Boards Sectioned and pins placed in relevant sections by a Virtual Assistant, (Here is how to choose the right one.)
Trust me you will see a major increase in your Daily impressions, web visitors and even followers! Isn’t that worth twenty bucks?
[clickToTweet tweet=”You will see a major increase in your Daily impressions with #pinterestsections” quote=”You will see a major increase in your Daily impressions #pinterestsections”]
Pinterest Sections Caution:
I noticed that every time I “moved” a pin into a section, that pin was no longer showing up on that board.
I then tested out the “Copy” button right next to “Move” and that solved the problem. We want people who still don’t know how to search using Sections, to find our Pins and content! So, here’s how you can fix that too:
When Moving a pin to a section, instead of selecting ‘move,’ select, ‘copy’
Choose board you want those pins copied, choose Section and voila, you have that pin in both locations! Yes, I know, duplication…but I will let Pinterest worry about cloud space! ?

Final words:
While some pinterest experts believe that the sections feature will not really affect your marketing strategy or Search results, I say It will soon. Why do I say that?
Because the Pinterest powers that be would not have wasted time adding it. Yes, right now it seems more suited to personal. And I wouldn’t spend quality time doing the manual moving pins. Especially if like us you have tens of thousands of pin images.
Still, I say its worth it cleaning and organizing your boards. Trust me the one who invested that time will reap the fruits of better search results!

[ Smiles ] If a person plans on using Pinterest, they might as well organise their boards.
Exactly Renard! 🙂 Thanks for swinging by!
I tried exploring Pinterest. It’s a really good platform for sharing your photos and links. The problem is that I need more time to make great photos for my pins.
Really Emman? We use Canva and you can whizz out a HD Shamazing image in less than 5 mins! You set aside 30 mins a week to create Images and Visuals for the week content and you are done…Or do you do stuff on the cuff? Pinterest is where its at!
Syl
This is a very helpful post that will encourage me to be more disciplined. I’m using pinterest, but I’m far too unorganized – focusing more on how to design pretty pins than on how to tag them right and write good captions.
Pretty Pins that nobody finds are a waste Renata. So not only make em pretty make them searchable and findable online…strait to your lovely content! 🙂
Syl

My daughter was just telling me about the Pinterest Sections the other day and asked if I had started using them yet? I must admit I knew nothing about them… How ever this is a very informative article and I can definitely see the benefit in using them. So, I’ll be penciling in some Pinterest time, so I can play around with this new feature?
Way to go Michele. Your daughter is a very smart young lady and definitely enjoy the playtime with this your very guidebook 🙂

Very informative post… I’m still struggling with pinterest even though I know it can be one of my strongholds when it comes to generating traffic. It’s always good to learn new thing about that platform.
Step up your game Anna.
Facebook and IG are now fully commercialised. So your reach is a 10th of a fraction of what it used to be. Meaning your Blog ranking in Search is also affected hugely as most bloggers’ traffic used to be FB aka Social lol! Pinterest is still kind to the organic search blogger! #JustSaying
Syl
Thank you for this guide! Actually I think Pinterest is still to underrated by bloggers and that’s a shame because it can help so much in PA and DA! I’ll follow all of your tips!
Hello Sabrina,
Aww thanks hun. Trust me its always the case, by the time they wake up it has become like google, FB, twitter….over subscribed and totally commercial. So you do your thing and keep rocking and crushing it out over there. 🙂
Syl
I have only just started using Pinterest and god knows why as I freaking love it.
Hey London Mumma,
It took me ages to embrace the value of Pinterest to our Brand, So just enjoy the journey and implement your marketing strategy on there faster! 🙂
Syl
This is awesome information. I just now stepping up my Pinterest game so this helps a lot. Thank you.
You are welcome Autumn 🙂
I am still getting used to the sections part and trying t embrace and utilize it a bit more. however, I am still stuck in my old ways quite a bit.
Hey Stephanie,
I know the feeling. Just when you get used to a new functionality, Pinterest rolls out a new one. They are showing up FB on new ideas and usages. Whether they help the user is neither here nor there in some cases! Sometimes its best to leave a winning horse alone lol! Thats why I take my time about sharing new stuff as I watch the space and test out how best it serves our brand and audience 🙂
Syl
At the moment, I am working on my Pinterest so much as I believe it is essential for blog traffic as well. And that includes adding of sections and cleaning up my boards. This article is definitely helpful and I’m already going to pin this. I am now going to work on my keywords, thanks to your guide.
Hey Dalene,
Enjoy and keep us posted on your results! Glad you have got value! 🙂
Syl
The sections doesn’t just keep your pins organized but it’s definitely going to help people find pins that they need from your page or your website. I love using it and I highly recommend it to other bloggers/site owners!
Fabulous stuff Alison. And glad you agree with out insights 🙂
Syl

Hi Julie! Alisa from Tailwind here (thanks for mentioning us!). Just wanted to pop in an give a bit more context to our reasoning for not supporting scheduling to board sections. From a Pinterest webinar (at about 27 minutes in), we learned this.
“Currently, (using Pinterest board sections) does not (have an impact on search), it’s really a Pinner feature that we mainly did to help you guys organize your Pins. So this was us really wanting to put our Pinners first here, making it easier for you to use Pinterest and have a really great experience. But if something changes we’ll definitely keep you posted.”
You can check it out here: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/6018226759212865027
The concern is that people want to create more general boards and then break them up by sections. This will actually hurt your Pinterest SEO as they are not looking at sections titles to inform search results. At this time you’re better off creating more specific boards.
That said, I love them for personal use!
Hey Alisa,
What a pleasure to hear from you. Indeed one of the reasons we took our time about sections was to test out how it serves not just our brand, but our audience too. And I must agree with you. That’s why We advise that when moving Pins to a Section its best to Copy the pin as opposed to moving it. That creates a Duplicate Pin, but hey, Thats what Pinterest is all about…Saving, re-pinning, Duplicating and multiplying 🙂
Its what we have shared here that; while at the moment Sections dont seem to have any Marketing advantage, they definitely help in cleaning up one’s boards and Could come in handy soon in search terms faster. It definitely is easier finding of one’s content and Pins!
And Knowing Pinterest, they just might make it a search-tastic functionality!
Either way we love Tailwind and keep serving! 🙂
Syl
A very factual and useful post! A great in depth breakdown of how to use Pinterest sections! Love the visual aid too!
