7 Tips to Overcome the Fear of doing Facebook Live Videos!
Are you terrified of doing a Facebook Live Video?
So was I the first time, so much so I was shitting up a bucket and almost didn’t go live at all. I put it off for 2 months.
I had no clue what to do…so I did some research and bit the bullet. Yet still on that first show; I made so many gaffs its unbelievable.
I was alone like talking to myself for about 8 minutes and ended up with 14 total views. I bit my tongue twice…Yet guess what, I felt like a million bucks when I was done and the rest is history…
So, the moral of this episode today is simple…
? There is always a first time for anything in life and doing Facebook live videos is no different.
??♀I kept on putting it off in the hope that the fear I was experiencing would disappear. And then…
Why Facebook Live Videos?
Well, I literally like many marketers had no choice, with my reach nose diving due to the ever changing Algorithm , I had to Act fast! If I wanted to continue using Facebook. I had to step up and leverage Live Video.
This was because…
It was and still can be hard for most to get interaction on your Facebook posts, mostly out of ignorance of the algorithm! Some do get “Likes,” but most people are so busy thus you find comments are less frequent.
At the time, we like many others had seen a gradual decline of reach on our Facebook Page. Until Facebook introduced Live streaming and I can tell you that; the one thing that works for us in Lead Generation and Brand Exposure, every week, are my live broadcasts.
You too can start today to build a regular, interactive audience, that trusts your word and takes action on your recommends!
One of the Biggest Weapons against Fear is ACTION. And for Facebook Lives the Action is Preparation!
You, see, if you are to attract any kind of sticky audience on your Facebook videos, don’t just do livestreams for the sake of it… Have an End Goal in Mind and thus a PLAN to get there via your FB live!
Are you going to run a weekly news show?
Will you be doing Product demos?
Wish to start an Interview Podcast?
You have a message to share via training?
Do you just want to show off your fashion sense? Whatever your aim, Preparation is 90% the work!
Have an End Goal in Mind and thus a PLAN to get there via your FB live!
You must be wondering, what did you do Julie Syl, share the deets already! Well, here goes:
The first step is to acknowledge the fears or self-image that is keeping us hiding…And below are the Steps to get rid of the fear of doing Facebook Live videos!
#1. Dig in and acknowledge any limiting beliefs that may be preventing you from doing live videos, or any action you know would be highly beneficial to your growth and service of humanity. For example, thoughts like:
▪I’m not good enough or I don’t have enough value
▪Gosh, I am not good looking enough
▪I dont know enough yet, I am a Fake… (This gremlin is the worst BTW)
▪I’m not smart enough
▪Am not a leader yet
▪Who is going to follow little old me?
▪Nobody will tune in, nobody wants to listen to me…
The above and whatever other negative false fears you serve up in your brain, do not serve you, or anyone else.
And remember someone out there is praying for your solution, your message. They are praying that YOU will show up with an answer to their problem, even though neither of you know it yet,…You don’t show up, they say stuck…
Imagine if that were you and your Messenger was holding back? ?
So below is my First Ever FB LIVE video which has accumulated a wee bit more views over time, mostly because I keep talking about it lol. YET the 14 initial video LIKES haven’t increased, funny that!

?? Here are 6 more Tips to help overcome the fear of doing live videos
Lets call it showing up on Social media to serve others on some level ?
#2. Take the focus off YOU – Remind yourself that you are doing the videos to help others. You are the messenger. It’s about the value you are providing. On the Practical side, Check your internet Connection, Your Notes, your Sound (If outside you may need a mic or earphones to cut out street noise)
#3. Pretend that you are talking to your best friend and focus on that thought. Okay this is an inside job! Practice makes perfect!
#4. Use Props and Notes – Stick a Post It note with bullet points in front of you, listing the things you want to talk about. You can also Use Props, maybe your favorite teddy bear, a toy, a book you have written in the background etc. This makes your Video look Pro.
#5. Stand up when doing a live video, if you aren’t yet confident. Make sure your background supports your brand, and Your Lighting is Okay. You dont want to be a Black/dark blob in your video! So make sure The lighting is in front of you not behind you!
#6. Focus on the Camera Spot on your phone/table/gadget instead of your face. That way you don’t start to freeze when you notice whatever insecurities about your face that you may have.
PLUS, you are looking strait at the audience, that person who has been praying for your answer…you are looking them right in the eye… ?
#7. Prepare Filler Content. Others may call it small talk. Trust me even if its itching you, and you want to look like your rock-star coach who has tons of followers…DON’T JUMP INTO your VALUE CONTENT from when you hit “Go live”! WHY?
Facebook needs a few mins; 2-3 at least, to spread the word that you are live and build your live audience. Notifications are going out as you get started on your live. So, talk about your last hour, your morning, your School run. Greet your audience. How about you prepare a Standard greeting… JUST LIKE A TV/RADIO SHOW!
Share your video to your page, a few groups, send to some friends, do your best to also spread the word. Get them to Engage and comment and that gets FB to spread the word even wider!
Go ahead and welcome viewers by name as they join you live. Always mention the “REPLAY Viewers” Thank them too and invite them to watch to the end and Share the broadcast as well! Then get started about 3-5 mins of hitting the Live button! (I know some coaches say Start immediately… What I share above is what has worked for me)
Focus on the Camera Spot instead of your face!
Here’s what I do:
My Live broadcasts are on Monday and Friday Video #JulieSylLive and Wednesday #JulieSylRadio in Audio! All about 1:35 pm UK time. (Subscribe to my event feed here if you want a reminder).
- So on Sunday Afternoon :
I set up a Facebook event to start gathering an audience. Closer to broadcast time I can post to this event. Those who are invited or who have RSVP’d get a notification when I do this, reminding them to tune in. - I Invite interested friends to the event. This is where you tag people and Unlike a Page Post, EVERY SINGLE ONE will receive a notification!
- I Share the Facebook event with relevant groups and sometimes on my personal Facebook Timeline (This depends on timing).
- All my FB Page Posts are Automatically TWEETED and I retweet them on the Broadcast dates at least 1 hour before the Live Video Training! I use the #YourPowerEchoes tag when sharing.
See how the above will help engender confidence in you while notifying more people about your FB live Video, thus ensuring you have a live audience?
So what happens after the live video?
?I quickly update my video thumbnail image, May tweak the title and Rump up description with Mentioned resources or recommends
?Share video link further out and may tag anyone I mentioned.
?Check if anyone requested for information or a personal Chat!
?Pin My FB Video URL to Pinterest via an Optimized Pin Image!
?Thank all Sharers on their share and Allow my wonderful PA Hazel to pick up from there!
Not only are live videos great to add value, they allow people to get to know you better. It is almost like reality TV in some ways.
If you are not doing lives you are doing yourself and potential customers/audience/team members a massive disservice.
Make them fun! Don’t take yourself too serious…And above all…just do them. Practice makes perfect and there is No time like the present! ?
Now once you have done that video, you can repurpose it and use it as a Free Give away, a training to build that list etc. Assuming you taught something. 😉 And you will want to know the sheer value of Facebook Video Ads.
It’s about taking the first step and then realizing that it was not that bad after all ?
So, there you have it, are you going to give it a go and do a live video today? Let me know in a comment below ⬇️⬇️⬇️

I have never tried using Facebook Live, I am more concerned between how would I look like on a Live and What to do during Live. LOL!
Hi Claire,
We all feel self conscious, but when you have a powerful message to deliver, you dont let that stand in your way! So keep trying and one day boom! 😉
Such helpful tips. I have never done a facebook live video at all.
Hey Adrian,
So will you never do a FB live video at all? If you do change that, pop over and read this post 😉
I’m going to be honest I’m not a fan of doing any form of video as I am not confident with the way I look. But some great tips here for those who just aren’t sure x
Well Rhian,
to each their own, I say you look amazing, but only you can decide that 😉 Then dome on out and share your message and offers via Video!
These are awesome tips because I hate being on video! I love the one about pretending to talk to your BFF. Maybe he or she will actually tune in to help get the feeling right.
Yes Ann,
When I do my videos, I act like I am chatting with a group of my girls. so no self consciousness, or shyness comes in. I sued to be so self conscious and unconfident, Not anymore! 🙂

We all start our self conscious and shy, ut if we truly know we have a message o blessing for someone, we allow our courage to show up and we do the deed. I am sure you can. 🙂
