So, Julie, how do I go about this? Do I Lead with Network Marketing Product or Business Opportunity in my prospecting? Do you too ever wonder what to lead with, my coaching client (lets call her Anna) asked.
And I totally felt her confusion simply because I was just as confused when I first started.
In today’s training episode, I am going to share with you my personal experiences and how other leaders in the industry go about it. So do share with your teamies.
Network Marketing – Leading with MLM Product or Business Opportunity?
So now you get it right? Lets do a quick recap:
Way back even 3 years ago if you had asked me the same question, I would have very quickly answered:
Lead with the network marketing Opportunity, thats where the big money is.
Today following some hard lessons learnt and coaching from awesome leaders like Tanya Aliza, Ray Higdon, I say: It all depends.
It depends on what you are comfortable doing, on WHO you are sharing your concept with.
If its a complete newbie to Network Marketing, I suggest you lead with the product. Have them take some samples if you have any or ask them to try the product out.
We talk about how to Ask fore a trial inside my private mastermind.
If its a business owner yo are prospecting, usually they like to know the bottom dollar so I might lead with the Opportunity esp. the comp plan and how we you get paid.
If you are talking to someone who you are not really close to, but know a little bit and… You’ve never talked to them about business or making money, and you’re like:
“Hey Joe, I just got started in this business. We’re going to make lots of money, its a no brainer. You should totally join with me.”
It can come across as weird and its Just Not Right. So…
Should You lead with a Network Marketing Product Or Business then?
The answer is never set in stone. Understand that for instance when I started out, while I was a total Network marketing virgin, I was in desperate need of an income opportunity.
So if anyone had approached me with a product, I would not have been interested. Purely because I didn’t have the money to spend on stuff.
On the other hand lots of newbies would probably be easier to transition from customer to team builder, if they are exposed to the opportunity the right way and they love the product already.
Want to know something interesting I have found?
Well, you’d think they are the best prospects, yet lots of Business owners I have found to be either quite closed (busy with existing projects). Or they are quite the serial entrepreneurs with a bad case of Shiny Object Syndrome. (Jumping from one opp to another as long as there is a promise of a quick return.)
Lots of people are like that by the way.
So, the best way I’ve learnt is to qualify people and determine whether they need your solution. Do they want a product or a business opportunity. You do this by asking the right questions.
And for those you simply need to Download my FREE Resource to help you Build Your MLM.
Many business men are serial entrepreneurs with a bad case of Shiny Object Syndrome.
Final Word:
In my humble opinion therefore, I recommend that you LEAD WITH THE PEOPLE. People join YOU not your Network marketing business. They Trust You not your product, those are thousands. esp. in the Health and Wellness space.
Whats the Vision of your Opportunity creators, lead with that.
Your Vision, Your Mission, Your Story, or a story of a team mate lead with those. share your team culture and how you help others win. share WHY you do what you do, ultimately these are what Inspire people to do Join you or Buy your products/services.
So, what’s Your View on what to lead with? Either way you are right! As long as you do whats necessary to help, support your people to grow or enjoy their product fully.

Multi level marketing MLM is not dead yet. It just got some bad name due to a lot of people starting a venture without any foresight. Your blog gives an insight into starting own business with network marketing… worth a share.
Hey Sundeep,
Glad you see the bigger picture 😉
Jules
i guess when you lead with how much money you can make in an opportunity, you attract entrepreneurs that may not know about network marketing but you run the risk of sounding like everyone else
You Lead with the People Jessamelle, otherwise you run the risk of having “Commission Breath”.
Sounding like everyone else is Not a cool thing!
Jules

I have been planning to start a business. It has always been my dream. This post has useful information for me to begin with.
I remember a woman once (who was my supervisor in her small service-based business where I worked – she bought the business from the previous owner) who had a very bad case of Shiny Object Syndrome. It used to drive me nuts, how – while working with clients in the business SHE HAD BOUGHT INTO (which was, at one point, her SO), we were over time supposed to start pushing each subsequent SO on the clients at the same time. It was very frustrating, and confusing for the clients.
OMG that would be a nightmare, totaly get your feelings around all that. Thanks for sharing Flossie 🙂
It is a very interesting read. I don’t run business and frankly not sure if I ever will but I am pretty curious, and I also know it helps a lot to better understand how people sell stuff to me
These are great suggestions. It always depends on the person and their situation. Flexibility is a must. Thanks for sharing!
Exactly Ceci…always the PERSON 😉
True, when you are starting the business, it depends upon your vision, the people you work with, and what are your goals. As a newbie it’s very easy to get lost without proper guidance.
Exactly why we are here Arun, to help the new marketer avoid as many pot holes as possible 🙂

I tend to lead with my “why”. Why do I do what I do? Why am I passionate about it? And that tends to lead to some really good conversations. I don’t know it this exactly answers your question, but it’s what works for me!
It does make a ton of sense Stephanie, Your Why pushes you to keep showing up and serving.

I like that you used the word “with”. And yes, as they say, a true leader leads which still acts with the people and not just boss around.
Glad we agree on leadership Michael 😉
