Has the 3 Foot Rule ever worked for you? Does it Work at all?
Guess what, when we first started out in network marketing, there is this “Strategy” for want of a better word that our Upline told us to use. Strangely, some leaders in the online marketing industry still teach it to their down-lines. It is very common in the offline Network Marketing circles.
And it’s called the “3 Foot Rule”.
No, we aren’t talking about a foot ruler or any mathematical instruments and none were harmed in the making of this episode!
So, what is this 3 foot rule?
Basically, it implies that ANYONE within 3 feet of you anywhere is literally a prospect and you should attempt to expose/market your Network Marketing opportunity to them.
Does it work?
Some will say yes, esp. those teaching it!
And…what do we at Kalungi Group think? Well,..
In my view, the 3 foot rule works in the same way that spam works, i.e. spray and pray and don’t mind whom you hit with your spray!
Yet, the proponents of this “nano strategy” believe that:
“the more people you can expose your business to, the more new people you can recruit into the business.“
That is solid business thinking if you ask me…And thats about all the sense there is in this style of marketing. Because…
Unfortunately, like spam, it’s likely to annoy far more people than it’s bound to generate interest. It’s like cold calling only it’s ‘cold live conversations.’
Examples:
You go to a shopping mall (Market place for some) and literally start approaching strangers and simply start to introduce your business or product…No idea if they are looking for that or whatever… Eiiik!
Or you are out and about minding your business and this strange man or woman stops you and strikes up a conversation about their product or service.
Where we grew up, street hawkers walk around town all day, trying to sell their wares in a “mobile shop” kinda thing. They are on average ignored, looked down upon and they in turn can be aggressive and loud.
Unless someone see’s something they wanted on their “mobile shop,” Or their price seems crazy cheap. Plus, they are exhausted by the end of the day, AND can barely meet their basic life and financial needs!
Don’t get me wrong this kind of thing works by numbers and sheer grit. Yet its HARD WORK and we at Kalungi Group prefer SMART WORK. Talking of which next week we shall talk about Goal setting for the new year that should get you going good 😉
You must have a stomach for rejection and strong as Samson!
Question is: Can you do it with Network Marketing?
My answer: It’s your choice. But I prefer a small thing called LEVERAGE and I would rather be a Laser Targeted Marketer!
Also I assume you intend to do network marketing Long term? Do you see yourself make any waves in your income by approaching strangers daily with no strategy at all?
If you said YES to the above Question, You must have a stomach for rejection and strong as Samson!
I suggest that you…

Aside from whats been shared in the Podcast above, ask yourself: is the 3 Foot Rule the best use of my time?
It may be best used when used wisely – with people who might already be interested in your Network Marketing opportunity.
For example, if you are attending a home-based business event or Meetup, the 3 Foot Rule may be more productive.
But you’ll waste a lot of time just like the street hawkers in Kampala by just using the 3 Foot Rule with each and everyone you come in contact with, everywhere. Because MARKETING TO EVERYONE IS MARKETING TO NO ONE.
Marketing to everyone is Marketing to No One.
It means you have no clue WHO your target market and audience are and so most of the time, you’ll just end up being what one of my coaches calls “the 3 Foot Fool“.
So I cannot say 100% that it does’t work, after all even a spray hits the target every so often. Just like the hawkers in my motherland city do! All I know, is this kind of strategy will lead to 2-3 things: Frustration , Lack of results and Maybe even Quitting.
Over to you now.

First time to hear about these 3 marketing tips and sounds really interesting most especially the one so called “social ice breaker”.
What a pretty nice tips and it could be so helpful. Such a very helpful post.
I love the idea of a social ice breaker. I think there are many out there who are still reserved when it comes to using social channels.
Glad you like our Social media Ice Breakers Dana. Which part inspired you the most and how has it worked for yo thus far? We’d love to hear from you!
I actually haven’t heard of this. Quite clever and interesting! Thanks for this!
I’ve never heard of the 3-foot rule, but it makes me think of people on the sidewalk seeking donations, sign-ups, or passing out pamphlets as you walk by. It definitely is an aggressive strategy, but I would think wearing a T-shirt or cap with you business handle or web URL and walking around would be just as effective at that. Social Media Ice Breakers sounds really nice!
The 3-foot rule is one of the integral components of Network Marketing. Thanks for sharing about the subject and tips for anyone who wants to excel in it!
I’ve actually never heard of the 3 foot rule before. You’ve given me a ton to think about! Thank you!
You are welcome Ashley, glad yo first heard it from us!
This is a super interseting concept. I hadnt heard of it!
I have never heard about this marketing technique before and after reading your post I find it quite useless. I think you should target your audience and know exactly who your potential clients are. If you just random try to sell your services to everyone you will fail, no doubt about it.
Hi Joanna,
We like to share whats out there, and sometimes we share what DOES NOT work to alert others! 😉
I don’t think I would have to grit to use the three foot rule. i am too self conscious. My husband sells life insurance for one of the biggest companies in the world, and his direct superior used to push this method but by a different name. They gave all of them a quota to meet and he rarely met that quota not because he couldn’t just start handing out cards or forcing people to meet with him, but because he didn’t want to be that pushy, and so instead he would target people he knew could use or wanted his services and in doing so he made many more sales than others in his team. I do know some people who sell cleaning products who do use the three foot rule and it seems to work for them. I suppose it just depends on how you come across and what you are selling.
Megan,
I like your Hubstar’s Approach, Get to know the person, and share your blessing. And yes some products are easier to sell in close proximity.
I forgot about the 3 foot rule, it’s been so long since I networked in person. I am glad that you touched on the subject, not sure if it does work for everyone but I’m sure it’s a nice place to start.
Hey Brandy,
Yes it is getting antiquated, yet most Network Marketing Companies add it to their coaching info for their new reps! Imagine that! 🙂
That is an interesting rule for networking. But I can see how it can work. I see how it can also be applied to other aspects of life as well.
I am a words and instructions person. I like words and I can follow directions. Although the introvert in me got anxiety when reading about the 3-foot rule… it helped that it was a process I could follow. 3 feet=stepping out of my comfort zone, anything else=is a no. The boundaries give me comfort for some reason, LOL. It makes marketing to those around you “doable”.
This is the first time I heard about the 3 foot rule. I believe it is not an effective way to expand your reach. It is like “cold calling” in the world of telemarketers. I think streamlining your audience would draw more customers in, otherwise, people may think you are speaking an alien language.
Heya Kristine,
The 3 foot rule is indeed not an effective strategy to build your network marketing business for sure. Be more targeted we say! 😉
I kind of get it, I do think it could be a little intrusive though!
I think it’s just important to be a bit more targetted with who you approach as you don’t want to market to anyone and everyone even if they’re not interested. An interesting concept though x
Thats exactly The point we are making here about the 3 foot rule Rhian! 😉
I can totally see how this would work well. I have bought things up when I am at events before with people standing close by and it has worked to my favour.
Well looks like the 3-foot rule has worked on you in this case Sarah!
🙂 Hmm. I am not a network marketer, so I am not in a position to say whether or not the “Three-foot rule, ” is effective or ineffective.
However, I am deeply appreciative of your insight.
Thanks for stopping by Renard and Glad you did learn something! 🙂
I think that the 3 foot rule can be a good starting approach to network marketing or direct sales. Since most people start their business as complete newbies, they have to approach 100s of leads before they get a great sense for who is and who is not qualified to be a prospect.
That said, I think someone in their upline, a sales manager or sales coach should quickly walk them through the process of pre-qualifying those leads without sounding like you are approaching them.
If I am doing cold-calling, then I only walk up to a home or into a business that I have already pre-qualified as potential prospects. It’s still difficult, but if I had tried selling educational books in a retirement community, I would have flamed out early in that summer job.
Hey Paul,
Thanks for your Insights. You hit the nail on the head, “PRE-QUALIFYING” people is essential to determining if they are the right fit and vice versa. They too are qualifying you 🙂
As a Newbie Approaching strangers is people’s worst fear. Remember “Stranger Danger”? Now people with no skills have to approach others they have been hard wired to avoid? It is a recipe for disaster, and leads to a ton of Attrition. The only Time I believe the 3 foot rule may work well is at an event. People are already pre-qualified to be approached and approach others. what you say determines whether you get the details, biz card and a follow on call or get ignored! 🙂
